Shane Mumford
Not on injury list
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Undisclosed
August 3, 2021
Mumford (undisclosed) doesn't appear on his club's injury list ahead of Round 21 against Geelong.
ANALYSIS
Mumford was initially not expected to feature in this game but conflicting signals means he may have a better shot of returning. With more issues on the ruck depth chart for Giants, Mumford would likely have a big role if he's fit.
Matt Flynn
Out for season
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Shoulder
August 3, 2021
Flynn has been ruled out for the rest of the 2021 season.
ANALYSIS
Flynn suffered a dislocated shoulder and any potential treatment will rule him out this year. He ends with 12 games played and 222 hitouts made.
Tom De Koning
Test to return
RCarlton Blues
Pectoral
August 3, 2021
De Koning (pectoral) is listed as a test ahead of Round 20 against Gold Coast.
ANALYSIS
De Koning picked up the injury early into Round 20 against St Kilda and has a race to get fully fit for the Suns game. He's offered more value with at least 15 disposals in two of his last three completed games, but someone new may have to serve at ruck if De Koning can't play.
Shane Mumford
Round 21 return unlikely
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Undisclosed
August 1, 2021
Mumford (undisclosed) is unlikely to play in Round 21 against Geelong, per coach Leon Cameron, AFLratings.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mumford is dealing with an injury that has put his status for Round 21 in serious doubt. It's unclear whether this injury is linked to the back injury that bothered Mumford last month.
Brodie Grundy
Strong effort in win
RCollingwood Magpies
August 1, 2021
Grundy scored one goal to go with 22 disposals (11 kicks, 11 handballs) in addition to recording 10 marks, six tackles and 18 hitouts during Saturday's 90-45 win over West Coast in Round 20.
ANALYSIS
Grundy has struggled for consistency since mid-May but his scoring ceiling still makes him one of the top options in his position. With at least 22 disposals recorded in two straight games, Grundy could be on the track for more consistent outputs over the final weeks of the season.
Luke Jackson
Four goal day v. Gold Coast
RMelbourne Demons
August 1, 2021
Jackson earned 17 disposals, 13 hitouts, four goals, three clearances and marks each and a pair of tackles Saturday as Melbourne trounced Gold Coast 128-30 at Marvel Stadium.
ANALYSIS
Jackson topped double-digit touches for the first time in four showings on Saturday, but it was a career-high four majors that caused a stir, with the 19 year-old tying Ben Brown as the match leader for goals. The performance ultimately netted the rookie forward / ruck his best fantasy output (95 points) since Round 13 and now finds him ranked seventh among AFL rising stars in total fantasy score (1102 points).
Tim English
Does well in win
RWestern Bulldogs
July 31, 2021
English scored one goal to go with 14 disposals (eight kicks, six handballs), six marks made and 27 completed hitouts from Saturday's 105-56 win over Adelaide in Round 20.
ANALYSIS
English lost his positional matchup to a dominant showing from Reilly O'Brien, but still scored over 100 fantasy points for the third time this season. It's still hard to expect consistent excellence from English, but he's proven to be more reliable in recent weeks with goals scored in four straight games.
Reilly O'Brien
Dominant despite loss
RAdelaide Crows
July 31, 2021
O'Brien logged 19 disposals (seven kicks, 12 handballs), completed 44 hitouts and recorded six marks and six tackles during Saturday's 105-56 loss to the Western Bulldogs in Round 20.
ANALYSIS
O'Brien dominated his ruck matchup by some distance and led his team in fantasy scoring even though they had their score nearly doubled on the contest. While much of the season hasn't gone as well, O'Brien is in better form of late with two games over 100 fantasy points scored over Rounds 19 and 20.
Tom De Koning
Leaves game with pectoral injury
RCarlton Blues
Pectoral
July 30, 2021
De Koning left Friday's 112-81 victory over St. Kilda with a suspected pectoral injury, The Age reports.
ANALYSIS
Carlton's star ruck was subbed out for midfielder Marc Murphy in Friday's match after accounting for five hitouts, two disposals and a single tackle. No word yet on De Koning's status heading into a Round 21 showdown with Gold Coast.
Rowan Marshall
Back against Blues
RSt Kilda Saints
July 29, 2021
Marshall is listed in the initial lineup for Round 20 against Carlton.
ANALYSIS
Marshall had to miss Round 19 due to a COVID-19 exposure situation so his fitness wasn't in doubt for when his name would be called. His most recent performance saw him log a season-best 122 fantasy points thanks to two goals scored and 19 disposals collected.
Andrew Phillips
Off injury list
REssendon Bombers
July 27, 2021
Phillips (hamstring) no longer appears on his club's injury list ahead of Round 20 against Sydney.
ANALYSIS
Phillips hasn't played since early-June and even if he's not seen among the other injured players, it's worth waiting to see his name in a lineup before making assurances over his return. He's averaged 20.7 hitouts per game in 2021.
Joel Amartey
Signs two-year deal
RSydney Swans
July 21, 2021
Amartey signed a two-year deal with the Swans on Thursday, Callum Twomey of the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old ruck has only reach 70 fantasy points in three of his six appearances this year. Amartey should continue to develop in Sydney with his new deal, but he's yet to make a significant impact in fantasy.
Stefan Martin
Could return by end of season
RWestern Bulldogs
Groin
July 20, 2021
Martin (groin) will have a slow return to full fitness, according to club medical chief Chris Bell.
ANALYSIS
Martin has struggled with his fitness since early-May and now has a more-clear schedule for when he can get back onto the field, which will hopefully be by September at the latest.
Rowan Marshall
Out for Round 19
RSt Kilda Saints
Personal
July 20, 2021
Marshall will miss Round 19 against West Coast after attending a bar that turned into a COVID-19 exposure site.
ANALYSIS
Marshall was quick to report his presence so he shouldn't have infected any teammates aside from Darragh Joyce, who went with him to the bar. In his absence, Paddy Ryder will serve as the lone ruck.
Callum Coleman-Jones
Nearing return
RRichmond Tigers
Calf
July 20, 2021
Coleman-Jones (calf) is listed as a test to return in Round 19 against Geelong.
ANALYSIS
Coleman-Jones has missed the past three weeks and is getting close to playing if he gets through training. So far, he's scored eight goals in five appearances in 2021.
Jonathon Ceglar
Off injury list
RHawthorn Hawks
July 20, 2021
Ceglar (hip) no longer appears on his club's injury list ahead of Round 19 against Adelaide.
ANALYSIS
Ceglar missed Round 18 with a hip issue but should be on the field if no other news emerges. As the second ruck to Ben McEvoy, Ceglar holds reasonable if unspectacular value.
Shane Mumford
Off injury list
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
July 20, 2021
Mumford (back) no longer appears on his club's injury list heading into Round 19 against Essendon.
ANALYSIS
Mumford comes back at the perfect time as Matt Flynn could miss multiple weeks or the season with a dislocated shoulder. In his best game, Mumford logged an impressive 53 hitouts against Gold Coast.
Matt Flynn
Sent to specialist
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Shoulder
July 20, 2021
Flynn will return to Sydney to have his dislocated shoulder assessed and is expected to need surgery, according to Head of Medical Cullan Ball. "His shoulder went back in the first time but after it happened again we expected it probably wouldn't be one we could manage for the rest of the season.
ANALYSIS
Flynn may have a hard time returning before the season is over after his shoulder popped out again. With Flynn out, the ruck depth chart is awfully thin for the Giants.
Sean Darcy
Could return against Swans
RFremantle Dockers
Knee
July 20, 2021
Darcy is listed as a test for Round 19 against Sydney, according to GM Peter Bell. "We are really hopeful that (Darcy) will be available for Sydney."
ANALYSIS
Darcy copped a knee strain during Round 18 against Geelong but still made 37 hitouts while continuing his impressive season. If fit enough to play, Darcy is one of the better rucks available through his averages of 16.8 disposals and 30.3 hitouts per game.
Rowan Marshall
Best fantasy numbers since Round 7
RSt Kilda Saints
July 18, 2021
Marshall realized 19 disposals, 16 hitouts, six marks, five tackles and a a pair of goals, behinds and clearances each Friday as St. Kilda fell to Port Adelaide 74-61 at Marvel Stadium.
ANALYSIS
Marshall caught fire on Saturday, setting or tying season-highs for kicks (14), disposals, goals and inside 50s (4). Those numbers helped net the 25 year-old his best fantasy output since an April 25 loss by St. Kilda to the Power in which the ruck also recorded his best totals year-to-date for marks (8), tackles (7) and fantasy score (124). Marshall now sets his sights on a July 24 match-up with West Coast rated the tenth most-lucrative option for selection at his position and the AFL's No. 4 for contested marks per outing (2.56).
Peter Wright
Scores three in win
REssendon Bombers
July 18, 2021
Wright scored three goals and one behind to go with 20 disposals (11 kicks, nine handballs), seven marks made and 10 hitters recorded during Sunday's 92-74 win over North Melbourne in Round 18.
ANALYSIS
Wright is someone who needs goals to put up his best numbers as he only handles duties as the second ruck with Sam Draper. Still, he's scored seven times in his last four games and could be in a good spot to produce even more.
Matt Flynn
Dislocates shoulder in defeat
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Shoulder
July 18, 2021
Flynn exited Sunday's 98-72 loss to Sydney not once, but twice, this after appearing to suffer multiple shoulder dislocations, The Age reports.
ANALYSIS
Flynn joined teammate Josh Kelly on the sideline of Metricon Stadium after twice dislocating his shoulder following a collision with Sydney's Tom Hickey on a centre bounce, leaving Jeremy Finlayson and Zachary Sproule, who subbed in for Kelly, to shift over to ruck. No word yet on whether or not the 23 year-old will be available for a Round 19 match-up with Essendon.
Mabior Chol
Scores four in win
RRichmond Tigers
July 16, 2021
Chol scored four goals to go with 10 disposals (eight kicks, two handballs) and made four marks during Friday's 106-86 win over Brisbane in Round 18.
ANALYSIS
Chol seldom offers tremendous fantasy value, but his performance in this game showed it's possible as a second ruck and roving player. If he's able to benefit from a resurgence in his team's form, Chol could offer excellent mid-tier value.
Toby Nankervis
Big effort in return
RRichmond Tigers
July 16, 2021
Nankervis logged 22 disposals (10 kicks, 12 handballs) and made 25 hitouts during Friday's 106-86 win over Richmond in Round 18.
ANALYSIS
Nankervis returned from a knee injury and immediately showed why the Tigers missed him so much by helping out in possession more than his backups had done. Much like Scot Lycett at Port Adelaide, Nankervis is a useful ruck in fantasy even if he doesn't log a massive number of hitouts.
Shane Mumford
Out with back injury
RGreater Western Sydney Giants
Back
July 16, 2021
Mumford will miss Round 18 against Sydney due to a back injury.
ANALYSIS
Mumford is coming off his best game of the season with 53 hitouts against Gold Coast but is back on the sidelines with a back issue that's flared up again. This leaves Matt Flynn as the primary ruck heading into the Sydney derby.
