FlyweightOther
June 10, 2022
Bontorin was hospitalized while attempting to cut weight for Saturday's matchup with Manuel Kape at UFC 275, and the bout has been called off, Mike Heck of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bontorin was hospitalized shortly before Friday's weigh-ins with kidney issues, and given the short notice it appears Kape won't have the opportunity to face a different opponent. It's unclear when Bontorin may be able to return to the Octagon.

Ready to go for June fight

May 4, 2022
Bontorin will take on Manel Kape at UFC 275 in Singapore on June 11, Farah Hannoun of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Bontorin's knee is ready to go and he'll return to the octagon after losing his last fight in January against Brandon Royval. Partially due the use of a banned substance in 2021, the 30-year-old is riding a four fight losing streak heading into his bout with Kape. His opponent has won each of his last two fights via first-round knockouts and has posted a 17-6-0 overall MMA record.

Drops razor-thin decision in Vegas

January 15, 2022
Bontorin lost to Brandon Royval via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC on ESPN 32 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
The judges probably got this one correct, but there is at least a mild case to be made that Bontorin deserved this fight. Heck, he landed 8-of-9 takedown attempts for 7:41 worth of control time. When you control your opponent for more than half a fight you typically win, but not today for the Brazilian. Bontorin's issue came in terms of striking. He was somehow credited with just 39 total strikes landed, a mind-boggling number considering his significant positional advantages. Of Bontorin's 14 career professional wins, 11 are via submission. That number truly illustrates how reliant he is upon his ground game, and it's difficult to win at the highest level with such a significant hole in your game. The 29-year-old has now lost three of four since winning his first two UFC bouts.
Facing Royval in January
FlyweightOther
October 1, 2021
Bontorin (suspension) is scheduled to fight Brandon Royval in a flyweight bout at UFC's Jan. 15 event, Mike Heck and Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com report.
ANALYSIS
Bontorin received a six-month suspension after testing positive for a banned diuretic following his win over Matt Schnell in mid-May, but the suspension was reduced to three months since an investigation by the USADA confirmed his claims of a tainted supplement. He faced Schnell on short notice and won via unanimous decision after missing weight. Royval lost to Alexandre Pantoja via submission in August and was also defeated in his previous bout with Brandon Moreno in November 2020.
Looking at USADA suspension
FlyweightOther
June 15, 2021
Bontorin has tested positive for a banned diuretic and is facing a potential suspension from USADA, Marcelo Barone of Combate reports.
ANALYSIS
Diuretics are often used to accelerate weight cuts, so the timing makes sense, as Bontorin took a short-nice fight in early-May and came in heavy for the matchup. Nonetheless, his team claims it is due to a tainted supplement as is attempting to bargain for a reduced, six-month suspension. There is precedent for this, as multiple successful fighters have been able to prove that a trace amount of hydrocholorothiazide -- the substance in question -- have been found via supplements in the past.
