Earns praise of offensive coordinator
Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt noted Tuesday that Brissett has had an "exceptional spring" while showing "great command of the offense," Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
While Drake Maye, who the team selected third overall in April's draft, has made a favorable impression on New England's coaching staff to date, Van Pelt reiterated that at this time, Brissett remains the starter as next week's mandatory minicamp approaches. Though Maye is destined to rise to the top of the depth chart down the road, Van Pelt has stressed that there's no timetable for that eventuality, noting that "it's a process. It's a marathon. We're going to take our time and do it the right way." In the meantime, Brissett figures to continue to handle the bulk of first-team practice reps followed by Maye, with Bailey Zappe and rookie Joe Milton also in the Patriots' signal-caller mix.

Clear QB1 in OTAs
Even with the Patriots taking Drake Maye with the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports that Brissett has taken all the first-team quarterback reps in OTAs.
ANALYSIS
Heading into training camp, Brissett has the edge over Maye for the Week 1 starting job, per Albert Breer of SI.com. That has played out in OTAs so far, with Brissett running the first-team offense smoothly and distributing the ball evenly to his receivers. Graff notes that Brisset has experience with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, with the duo spending one season together with the Browns in 2022. Brissett started in 11 of 16 regular-season games that season, completing 64.0 percent of his passes for 2,609 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Brissett kept the seat warm for 11 starts last season while the Browns waited for Deshaun Watson to serve his suspension. He held his own in the caretaker role, finishing middle of the pack (more or less) in most passing stats despite struggling on deep throws. While he looked downfield at a good clip -- his 8.5 average target depth ranked seventh and his 47 attempts of 20-plus yards were sixth most through Week 12 -- his on-target percentage ranked 22nd (42.6) and he threw four interceptions on deep attempts (3rd most). After signing with Washington this offseason, Brissett enters training camp as the backup to Sam Howell. Washington wants Howell, whose only start last season came in Week 18, to win the job, but if Brissett finds himself under center he’ll have a good trio of wideouts to target, led by Terry McLaurin. While unlikely to do much more than what he did in Cleveland last season, Brissett is accurate enough to have value in two-QB leagues if he's surrounded by decent talent.
