Joined in backfield by Mixon
Pierce looks slated to work as the backup to Joe Mixon, DJ Bien-Amie of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Pierce will no longer have to compete with Devin Singletary, who won the starting job down the stretch in 2023 before leaving in free agency, but he now faces a stronger obstacle to touches in the form of Mixon, who had 257 carries for 1,034 yards and nine TDs last year and boasts a true three-down skillset. As a rookie in 2022, Pierce burst onto the scene with 939 rushing yards, but he disappointed in Year 2 with just 416 yards on the ground. The 2022 fourth-round pick could bounce back if he can better adjust to the running scheme introduced last offseason by offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, but the team could also add more competition to this backfield ahead of Week 1.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Forgotten man in Houston?
Pierce has apparently been passed over for consideration for the Texans No. 1 running back job he once held, given the recent acquisition and subsequent financial commitment made to Joe Mixon reported by DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
Pierce saw 2023 backfield mate Devin Singletary, who usurped him for the No. 1 job in the latter portion of last season, leave via free agency to the Giants earlier in the week. However, the Texans quickly made a trade with the Bengals for Mixon and handed the new arrival a three-year extension Thursday. Pierce's status therefore remains murky, considering he's likely to get additional competition in next month's 2024 NFL Draft and looked like a poor fit in the team's new offense last season while averaging just 2.9 yards per carry.

While the addition of Devin Singletary gives the Texans more than they had last year, the former Bill alone shouldn't be too threatening for Pierce, who was a revelation almost immediately when he arrived to the Texans. It's not often that a team quietly names a rookie, fourth-round-pick running back its starter in the early days of training camp, but it's easy to see why the Texans were convinced. Pierce caught fire between Weeks 3 and 10, running for 670 yards (4.8 YPC) and three touchdowns in seven games while adding 20 receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown on 25 targets. Eventually, the burden of single-handedly carrying the dreadful Houston offense caught up with him. Defenses knew Houston couldn't pass or give the ball to anyone else, so they sold out to stop Pierce and held him to just 167 yards rushing (3.0 YPC). A high-ankle sprain mercifully gave Pierce the final month off, but all in all it was a highly impressive rookie season and he came back healthy for spring practices. There's a good chance he's the focal point of Houston's offense again, considering the franchise is in the hands of a defensive-minded head coach (DeMeco Ryans) and a 21-year-old QB (C.J. Stroud) who is stuck with subpar receivers for his rookie year.
